What Brighton customers have said

Reviews from our Checkatrade profile, with the job location shown on each review.

We’re really pleased with the high standard of finish from the plastering, painting and tiling.
Verified reviewer, BN1, a kitchen and bathroom in a central Brighton flat, Checkatrade, October 2026
They laid protective flooring to ensure the carpet leading to the kitchen was not damaged and left the place clean and tidy every day!
Verified reviewer, BN2, a new kitchen at a community hall in Moulsecoomb, Checkatrade, May 2025
I’d use Rewell Renovations again in a heartbeat. Friendly, hardworking and professional bunch of guys who did an amazing job of ripping out my old kitchen, then installing a new one.

Before you start in Brighton

Rules that catch people out, from the council’s own pages, read on 27 October 2026. Check the council’s page for your address, because rules change.

Conservation areas and Article 4 DirectionsSeveral Brighton conservation areas have an Article 4 Direction, which means works such as changing windows, doors and roofs on street-facing elevations need planning permission. The council has pages for Queen’s Park (from 4 June 2022), North Laine, Preston Park and West Hill. The full list of conservation areas is on the council’s designation page.
Replacing windows and doorsWhether you need permission depends on the material, the look of the building, whether it is a flat or a house and whether it is listed. Listed buildings always need listed building consent. Read the council’s page on planning permission for doors and windows.
Skips, scaffolds and materials on the roadAnything placed on a pavement, road or verge needs a council licence first, and a parking bay suspension if it sits in a bay. See the council’s highway licensing page. Ask whoever quotes who will arrange it.
Taking out a wallA load-bearing wall normally needs a structural design and building control sign-off. The Planning Portal explains the rules.

Questions we get asked

Do you work on flats and period homes in Brighton?

Yes. We renovated the kitchen and bathroom of a central Brighton flat, as one customer reviewed on Checkatrade in October 2026. Tell us about your home when you ask for a quote.

Do I need planning permission to renovate in Brighton?

Often not for work inside, but changing windows, doors or the outside of a building can. Conservation areas, Article 4 Directions and listed buildings add rules. See the council’s page on doors and windows.

Who arranges a skip or scaffold on a Brighton street?

Any skip or scaffold on the road or pavement needs a licence from the council, and a parking bay suspension if it sits in a bay. Ask whoever quotes your job who will arrange it, and get it written into the quote.

Which parts of Brighton do you cover?

Brighton and Hove, and the wider Sussex area. Reviews of our work on Checkatrade include BN1 and BN2 addresses in Brighton.
