Do you need permission for a fence?

The Planning Portal says fences, gates and walls up to 2 metres high, or 1 metre next to a highway, usually do not need planning permission. That does not apply to listed buildings, and a local Article 4 Direction can remove it. See the Planning Portal guidance and check with the council before you build.

A fence also has an owner. Agree who owns and maintains the boundary with your neighbour before you replace it.
